What Is Fly Tying?

Fly Tying is the process of tying an artificial fly to a fly fishing line. Now it might not sound all that hard, but it does require a bit of expertise to get it just right. The right kind of fly tying with the right kind of fly fishing method can do wonders for what you may catch while fishing the fresh waters or salt water seas.

The methods I described above can be found within the many videos that can teach you the right techniques and methods. Take the time to go through all the videos and you will find yourself progressing well.

What is Fly Fishing?

Fly Fishing is an art form. It is an ancient angling form in which you uses various artificial flies with a unique rod and line to fish both fresh and salt water.

You can find fly fishers in almost any kind or water. The norm for fresh water fly fishing usually falls into these categories,

  1. Cold Water Fresh Water Fishing (Trout, Salmon or Steelhead).
  2. Cool Water Fresh Water Fishing (Pike, Perch or Walleye).
  3. Warm Water Fresh Water Fishing (Bass, Chub or Catfish).

Depending on the lake or river you fish, the techniques will all be different.

If you looking for a single way to fish the water as a fly fisher, you may be a bit disappointed. There is no one way to do it. Experts from all over the world have their unique techniques. If you follow one expert over another, that is OK. In time you will develop your own unique technique that will work for you. At that time you will become your own expert and may teach others your methods.

For beginners it does take time to learn. The trial through failure method works the best. Not only is it fun, but the more you do it the less failures you will have and more success you will find in each outing.

If you are learning more than one method at one time, only focus on that one method for the entire day. It is really important not to jump all over the place. Even if that method is not working for you and you are not catching anything, you will still become more familiar with the method and soon perfect it. The next time you are out, try another method. Soon you will start to become comfortable and understand what method works best for you. This works best for both your fly tying methods and fly fishing methods.

Not everyone is born an master fly fisher. If you were born into a family of fly fishers, then you are one of the luck ones and probably a good instructor to our viewers.
